Piyo doesn’t require coordination, so you will be able to catch each and every move on the fly. Do note, however, that some of the moves require flexibility and balance. Or to put it better, they focus on improving those. I ended up with better posture, and feel more agile due to improved flexibility and control over my body. I guess slow movements teach you about control.

Not being able to exercise comfortably and having gained back a lot of the weight I’d lost with the Brazil butt Lift workout program, I was very interested when I saw a program being released from Beachbody that combined Pilates with Yoga. My only caution would be if you are a very active person or are training for something in addition to doing your PiYo workouts, such as a 5k or half marathon. When Chalene Johnson and Beachbody put together the PiYo workout program together, they decided to create two packages. Version one,  the PiYo DVD Package, is an eight workout package. The second version is a package that includes everything from the original, plus two additional workouts. These extra workouts use the strength slides (which we will cover below.)

For the rest of the review, we will call this version PiYo Base.  The second version that includes the strength slide workouts will be called PiYo Strength or PiYo Deluxe. Although Chalene can do several different kinds of workouts, she loves the benefits that both yoga and Pilates have to offer but gets bored with the sitting still of yoga and the repetitive motions in Pilates.

The Piyo workout is simply described as a 60 day workout program, created by Chalene Johnson from Beachbody, specified as a low-impact routine that doesn’t require weights or any additional equipment. Marketed as a one-size-fits-all type of program, it is said to work for every age and fitness level.

Chalene created this program few years back, and it was part of her routine as a group fitness instructor. According to her, feedback was quite encouraging, so they decided to create a DVD program. So let’s add some context. I’ve been told to respect a certain structure for this review, so let’s start answering this first.

The goal of this program, it seems to me, is to provide an alternative to strenuous workout products. Or to say it in other words- something that can easily fit into the schedule of the average Joe and Jane without them having to sign a military boot camp contract.

I love that you calculate your own unique calorie needs because obviously a larger woman or a man needs to eat more than a small woman. If your maintenance calories are 3000 per day and you cut back to 1200, you are essentially starving. A 600 calorie deficit is pretty significant (you will lose approximately 1-1/2 pounds of fat per week), but not extreme. Go Beachbody!

Since the initial release of the PiYo program, Beachbody has launched online streaming of its ever-growing library of workout programs. This feature is called Beachbody On Demand. It is an online membership that allows you to access every workout that used to come with a program package only now in digital format.

Despite these minor flaws, I have never seen all the muscles in my body like I did after completing this workout program – even more so than when I did BBL. It really does work, and you will not be disappointed.

Similar to dead lifts, this works the hamstrings and glutes without the same strain. Standing on your right leg, lift the left foot off the floor. Keeping the left knee bent, tilt forward as you push the leg behind you and then tilt backward slightly as you swing the knee forward and up to waist level. Keep moving the leg backward and forward in a single leg “running” motion. Perform 20 on each leg.

On your hands and knees, lift up on to your toes, raising the knees off the floor by a couple of inches, without moving the hips. Use your core to hold the position and stabilise for one minute. PiYo will give you hardcore results without the strain of some other at-home workout programs.

Another thing that really turned me off was the heavy promotion and push on buying additional products such as BeachBody Strength Slides and Charlene Johnson’s Hardcore on the Floor DVD. All of this put together = $132.60 which to me is just ridiculous, especially when there are better programs out there for a quarter of the price..

I love that calorie estimates are listed for all of the food types, such as approximately 140 calories per serving of lean protein. This helps make the plan flexible when choosing foods which are NOT on the Beachbody list.
